The intention is to prevent the proliferation of private sewers and the problems of ownership and maintenance associated with them. This can be achieved by harmonising the essential elements of the design and construction of sewers set out in the Approved.

There are three types of sewers: sanitary, storm, and combined. This chapter presents an overview of the design and construction procedures of sanitary sewers.
